Through his diligent guidance, the group has impressed its audiences with the depth and range of its interpretive skills in performances of a capella early music repertoire. ESPRIT was awarded a first prize at the Peel Music Festival in April 2012, and is the proud recipient of the Hon. Barbara A. Hagerman Award for first place at the 2012 Ontario Provincial Music Festival. In August 2012, ESPRIT was awarded second place in the Canadian Nationals of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals (Class 100 - Honourable Barbara A. Hagerman – Best performance by a community choral group 19 and up). As part of its mission the chorus seeks out performances in historical venues; in the summer of 2011, ESPRIT toured Montreal, Québec, performing at St-Joseph Oratory, Notre-Dame Basilica, Christ Church Cathedral and Marie-Reine-du-Monde Cathedral. David's latest opus is recorded in the week that the Singer's set off for their 2013 choir Tour of Mallorca. The Leeds-based chamber choir St Peter's Singers make a return visit to the beautiful Balearic island of Mallorca from 26th to 29th October 2013. The choir will be directed Alan Horsey and accompanied by its renowned organist David Houlder, who will also perform organ solos in each of the recitals. Each hour-long recital will comprise a panorama of sacred choral music from British and Continental traditions spanning over 500 years. Particular features of the 2013 programmes include celebration of the birth centenary of Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) as well as works by composers with particular associations with Leeds Minster, where the Singers are based. This new commission revolves around the creation of a person with endless potential. The text centres on a well-know whakatauki or proverb: Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tuohu koe, me he maunga teitei [Seek that which you treasure most – if you must bow your head, let it be to the loftiest of mountains] A mihi pepeha, hailing the fabrics of space and the throes of the heart, is joined by the organ – a giant celestial factory, chaotic and cacophonous, with great starry arms placing pieces into unique moulds forming the fragments of the final section of the work – a mighty invocation of the whakatauki.  less
