We rehearse weekly to improve our vocal skills and build lasting friends...  moreVocal Vibes is an ensemble of around 40 singers based in Ringwood, Victoria. We are committed to building community through excellence in a Cappella harmony, and we love to learn. We rehearse weekly to improve our vocal skills and build lasting friendships in the process. Although we have diverse backgrounds, our members thrive by working together to achieve shared goals. We sing a range of repertoire from jazz standards to 21st-century pop, barbershop to show tunes, but most importantly we sing a Cappella. As well as entertaining audiences across the eastern suburbs of Melbourne we compete regularly in barbershop harmony competitions at a national level. In mid-April, 2011, composer Ola Gjeilo spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus to join the Choir in recording 3 of his pieces, (the teaser/trailer URL is found below) This performance of Gjeilo's "Ubi Caritas" is from that session, following a rendition in which the composer joined the Choir and improvised an accompaniment (URL below). In this video the Choir sings the piece in its published (unaccompanied) version. One behind-the-scenes comment: On the last page of the piece, when the first melodic material occurs again - Ola, who was sitting in the hall, asked half the Choir to hum while the other half sang to create a more ethereal effect. In the beginning, Greenwood Singers specialized in the performance of a Cappella music from different stylistic periods. Its programming has now expanded to include works with soloists, instrumental ensembles and chamber orchestra. A versatile ensemble, the Choir has performed frequently with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in a wide variety of programs which have included Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, Holst’s The Planets, family Christmas concerts, the concert version of Jerome Kern’s Showboat, Orff’s Carmina Burana (with the Alberta Ballet) and the ESO’s 1992 reunion with the British rock group, Procol Harum. We welcome experienced SATB singers who are keen to perform music of all genres to a high standard in an informal environment. Our ethos: CONTEXT Historical, social and environmental contexts of music, and the influence of these on performance, will be central to rehearsals and concerts. They will define the themes of our repertoire each year. COLLABORATION Based in Leeds, the Choir has numerous opportunities to collaborate with other ensembles, composers and charities to promote and support musicians throughout the North.
