Philomela is a wonderful experience that will linger in your mind even after the Music has died down. Philomela has become one of the most highly regarded Choirs in Finland. Marjukka Riihimäki has acted as the Choir´s conductor since it was established in 1984. Philomela is one of the most original Choirs in Finland. It is a group of 40 unprejudiced, Music-loving women who together form a graceful, polyphonic Musical instrument. the Choir performances are intensive and surprising experiences which combine theatrical elements to Music. Philomela’s rehearsals are held in Helsinki but the Choir gives several concerts per year all over Finland as well as abroad. Musical profile of Philomela is composed of contemporary Scandinavian Choir Music with flavours of world Music, especially Finnish folk Music.  less

We give you the pleasure of enjoying fine Music and knowing you are a part of a Musical community - a team that enriches the life of all of us. We currently have about 50 members. We feature a variety of Music from popular to classical. Our selections are fun and challenging for singers and entertaining and rewarding for audiences. Open rehearsals for potential new members are held in September and January at the beginning of the rehearsal seasons. No formal auditions are held, but we do expect new members to be experienced in four part choral singing, and to have some ability to read along with sheet Music. We are resident at St. Matthew's parish church in Chapel Allerton. We rehearsal three times a month, on a Friday evening and sing four services a month, including Evensong on the first Sunday of every month. We also often host come and sing days and various workshops, our two most recent projects have been on Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri and Mozart's Requiem.
