The Choir performs every Sunday evening in the Roman Catholic cathedral of St. Colman's, a majestic building situated on a hill in the town famed for being the last port of call for the Titanic. The membership of the Choir has grown considerably in the last five years and it now boasts more than 30 voices. The Choir is a previous winner at the world famous Cork Choral Festival and has travelled to Vienna, London and Italy to perform at various events. In 2009 the Choir was honored to be asked to sing in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City for the Sunday liturgy. That same year they also performed at Westminster Cathedral. They have been asked back to St. Peter's in July 2013 to perform again. Philomela is a wonderful experience that will linger in your mind even after the Music has died down. Philomela has become one of the most highly regarded Choirs in Finland. Marjukka Riihimäki has acted as the Choir´s conductor since it was established in 1984. Philomela is one of the most original Choirs in Finland. It is a group of 40 unprejudiced, Music-loving women who together form a graceful, polyphonic Musical instrument. The Choir performances are intensive and surprising experiences which combine theatrical elements to Music. Philomela’s rehearsals are held in Helsinki but the Choir gives several concerts per year all over Finland as well as abroad. AIMS and OBJECTIVES • The main aim of this Choir is to gather people who have the same vision together to produce good ‘live’ performances. Also to record strong material and spread the word of God through Music. • To search for talent and make use of it in the most profitable way. • To create job opportunities for the youth. • To grow and develop artists in Music. • To make a difference in people’s lives by creating job opportunities.
