The text is adapted from The E.E. Cummings poem of The same name. Composer Gwyneth Walker writes: "This is a poem of grandeur and of praise. Therefore it might be expected that this musical setting would aim at vastness, grandeur and awakening." Walker accomplishes this through a variety of means. First, The piano introduction includes slowly unfolding piano arpeggios which focus on open intervals of octaves, fifths and fourths, exploiting The full range of The piano keyboard. The composer also takes The Singers on a harmonic journey which begins in a low register in C minor, and Then travels through a number of oTher key areas until it reaches The distant key of G-flat. Six Degree Singers has featured in events all around The D.C.-metro area, including The Silver Spring Loy Krathong Thai Festival and The Chesapeake-Potomac Invitational Bonspiel, an annual curling event, and was recently selected to perform in The closing concert of The Kennedy Center's National Choral Festival in 2014. Concerts by The group feature a cappella music of Scandinavia and The Baltics, as well as North-American composers. Music by composers such as Mäntyjärvi, Daniel-Lesur, Rautavaara, Martin and Pärt are ideal showcases for The choir’s lush and full sound. Members of The group are dedicated to excellence in rehearsing and performing. With a repertoire consisting of 8 to 16-part music, The twenty Singers are mostly performing as soloists. Now in its fifth season, voces boreales has already performed in a number of prestigious concert series, such as The National Arts Centre eXpres- sion series, Musique Chez Nous at Bishop's University, Mondial Choral Laval and The Montreal International Bach-Academy. The CD is expertly conducted by The choir's musical director, James Sherlock and guest instrumentalists are 17-year old Edward Picton-Turbevill on The organ and award-winning young cellist James Barralet playing The solo part in Sir John Tavener's 'Svyati' for cello and choir.
