We last performed this piece in October 2020 at a concert that took place between two national lockdowns, when it felt especially poignant. "I wandered lonely as a cloud" is a setting by composer Elani Willemse, of the poem of the same title by William Wordsworth, telling of the poet's melancholic experience of loneliness within his daily existance and how this melancholy is briefly relieved ...  more"I wandered lonely as a cloud" is a setting by composer Elani Willemse, of the poem of the same title by William Wordsworth, telling of the poet's melancholic experience of loneliness within his daily existance and how this melancholy is briefly relieved upon encountering a vast and beautiful field of daffodils. The melody paints the landscape, written in a minor key, which is then resolved to the major when his sadness finds resolution in this beauty that he experienced. Synaesthesia is incorporated by using specific harmonies and rhythmic patterns to imitate what the composer might imagine the poet saw, and the emotions he felt. This ultimately transforming the piece into a choral musical painting.  less

T...  more"Sanctus" (Ola Gjeilo) is sung by The Central Washington University Chamber Choir (Gary Weidenaar, director). In May, 2013, composer Ola Gjeilo spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus, joining the Choir in recording 4 of his pieces. This performance of Gjeilo's "Sanctus" is from that session. The other pieces were "Luminous Night of the Soul", & "Across The Vast, Eternal Sky", accompanied by the composer at the piano and joined by the Kairos Quartet -- the resident faculty string quartet at CWU. The final piece, "Ubi Caritas II: Through Infinite Ages", was recorded both in an unaccompanied rendition (how it is written and published) and in a version with Mr. Gjeilo improvising an accompaniment to the Choir. This was Ola's second time on CWU's campus. His first visit was in the spring of 2011 and yielded 5 videos, a wide-ranging interview with the composer and other bonus material.
