Dedicated to developing new audiences for music rooted in Balkan, Slavic, and Caucasian women's vocal traditions, Kitka also strives to expand the boundaries of folk song as a living and evolving expressive art form. Kitka's activities include an Oakland-based home series of concerts and vocal workshops; regional, national, and international touring; programs in the schools; recording, publication, and broadcast projects; master artist residencies; commissioning; community service work; and adventuresome collaborations.  less

As the finale to the Vocal Art Ensemble's "INKSPELL--Choral Music Inspired by Masters of Poetry" concerts, we performed Jaako Maantijaarvi's first Three Shakespeare Songs, culminating on our playful, crafty interpretation to this famous text from MacBeth....  moreAs the finale to the Vocal Art Ensemble's "INKSPELL--Choral Music Inspired by Masters of Poetry" concerts, we performed Jaako Maantijaarvi's first Three Shakespeare Songs, culminating on our playful, crafty interpretation to this famous text from MacBeth. The women shed their shawls and toss them into the center to represent the ingredients being dropped into the bubbling 'cauldron'.  

A video of us from March 2020, recorded at BBC Maida Vale Studios. One of five songs we recorded which were broadcast on Radio 2 on Good Friday. The soloists here are Bukola Abdul and Alexis Constantinou.
