In May, the choir travelled to Italy to take part in the “Venezia in Musica” International Choral Competition. They won first prize in the secuLar music category, came runners up in the sacred music category, and received the “Outstanding Performance” prize for Bogorditsye Dyevo by Rachmaninov. They have been awarDed “Choir of the Day” at all five BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year regional rounds they have entered, and in 2008 reached the adult category finals in the Royal Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool, alongsiDe the six other best adult choirs in the country. Ethel Waters first sang 'Stormy Weather' at The Cotton Club night club in Harlem in 1933 and recorDed it that year. This version is based on that by the GolDen Gate Quartet, the most successful of all of the African-American gospel music groups who sang in the jubilee quartet style. Formed in 1934 the group remains active today, although with no original members.
