Dedicated to developing new audiences for music rooted in Balkan, Slavic, and Caucasian women's vocal traditions, Kitka also strives to expand the boundaries of folk song as a living and evolving expressive art form. Kitka's activities include an Oakland-based home series of concerts and vocal workshops; regional, national, and international touring; programs in the schools; recording, publication, and broadcast projects; master artist residencies; commissioning; community service work; and adventuresome collaborations.  less

All sessions run from 1pm to 4pm, and are being held at Phoenix Community Centre, Brighton, BN2 9ND (except 08/11/2015) I am running five sessions. Everyone is welcome, and no previous singing experience is necessary. Each session will introduce new songs, as well as continuing to work on a core repertoire. As the finale to the Vocal Art Ensemble's "INKSPELL--Choral Music Inspired by Masters of Poetry" concerts, we performed Jaako Maantijaarvi's first three Shakespeare songs, culminating on our playful, crafty interpretation to this famous text from MacBeth....  moreAs the finale to the Vocal Art Ensemble's "INKSPELL--Choral Music Inspired by Masters of Poetry" concerts, we performed Jaako Maantijaarvi's first three Shakespeare songs, culminating on our playful, crafty interpretation to this famous text from MacBeth. The women shed their shawls and toss them into the center to represent the ingredients being dropped into the bubbling 'cauldron'.
