The Renaissance of Choral Music: How Connections are Driving Innovation

  • Choral music is experiencing one of its most prosperous moments in history, thanks to the connections and new music being created. What happened at the ACDA convention is a faithful reflection of how exciting this world can be, and the energetic and artistic power that good connections between people can unleash. Formats such as consortia allow us to create connections that feed new art and create valuable connections with colleagues while also allowing us to offer innovative concerts.

A prominent case in the world of consortia is Argentine composer Santiago Veros, who has achieved the feat of bringing together top-quality choirs in the choral world. Recently, in an interview, he recounted the story of the Lake of Stars consortium, a work he wrote in collaboration with renowned poet Charles Anthony Silvestri. This consortium involved emblematic choirs such as Cantala Lawrence University Women's choir, Elektra Women's Choir, Canzona Women’s Ensemble, Sora Singers (Brock University), and the Nazareth College Treble Choir. Finally, Elektra Women's Choir, made a fantastic recording that will be available starting March 25, 2023, on Santiago Veros's YouTube channel.

With this premiere, the composer aims to raise awareness among directors about the importance of participating in consortia. These experiences have the ability to bring together emblematic choirs to bring works of this caliber to life, fascinating works that connect us professionally with other directors and can bring audiences works that would be very difficult to commission by a single choir. This consortium model gives us the opportunity to acquire very valuable art and connect with great choirs.

In 2023, Santiago Veros' proposal is to create a consortium that connects hundreds of directors for years. To celebrate his 10-year anniversary as a professional composer, the composer will create a number of masses each year. The mass is a symbol of people's unity and will be “The Mass for The Union”, where each number will be a consortium. In this proposal, each director can premiere the commissioned number whenever they deem it convenient. They can participate in as many numbers of the mass as they want, and at the end of the design, they can acquire the complete mass if they wish. It will be a great adventure to connect hundreds of directors and go through many experiences together. It is a very exciting way to celebrate the union between people through the years.
