Men's harmony singing improvers weekend 13-15 November, Cambridgeshire

  • I'm always trying to get more men singing.

For some reason some men don't like mixed group, but prefer to sing with their own kind. I must admit that there is something special about hearing all male (or all female) voices in harmony together - it has another dimension from a mixed choir.

I thought I'd offer a chance for men to sing together in a small group in a more focused way than the usual weekly choir session. I've found a lovely venue near St. Neots, Cambridgeshire which we will have exclusive use of. It's affordable, secluded and quiet.

I'll be taking between 12 and 16 men on a journey of vocal discovery over a whole weekend to fine-tune their harmony singing skills in a small group. The weekend will suit those men who've sung in mixed choirs for a while and would now like the chance to hone their skills in a smaller group.

I have a handful of places left on this singing weekend in November.

Here is the full information about the weekend. Please do pass it on to any male singers you think might be interested.

    — take your singing to the next level

    The Claret Centre, Buckden Towers
    High Street
    Buckden

    Cambridgeshire

    Cost: £140 (shared twin)/ £190 (single occupancy)

The cost for the weekend includes full board, all tuition and teas/ coffees throughout.

Take your singing to the next level by working as a small ensemble over a whole weekend. Sing with other like-minded men in peaceful surroundings. With just 12 to 16 singers this is your chance to explore your voice in a safe environment with a supportive bunch of like-minded singers, all of whom want to explore and stretch their harmony singing abilities. Serious work, but in a fun style!

    • improve your singing and harmonising skills
    • learn to get the best out of your voice
    • get feedback on your singing and harmony skills
    • relish a challenge and seize the chance to work in a small ensemble
    • be prepared to look and listen to yourself carefully
    • step up for a full-on weekend of hard, but rewarding work

This weekend course will be strictly limited to a maximum of 16 singers so I can give more attention to individuals. There will be some training on breath, voice production, vocal qualities, etc. but most of the work will be done using harmony songs drawn from a range of traditions across the globe.

Away from the demands of family, work, choirs, performances and mixed voices, this is a chance to work in detail on men's voices, harmony singing and generally having fun and making a wonderful sound in a safe and relaxed space. To get the most out of the weekend you will need experience of harmony singing and be prepared to work in detail on some fairly complex songs. You may have been singing in a choir for some time and now want to try your hand at singing in a smaller group.

The Claret Centre at Buckden Towers is a Victorian house set in a fifteen acre estate offering seclusion and tranquillity. A beautiful collection of buildings from diverse historical periods is surrounded by a variety of gardens and natural features including a Tudor knot garden, a lake, woodland walk, pasture and lawns. Buckden itself is a pleasant village which used to be an old coaching stop on the Great North Road in Huntingdonshire.

Accommodation is in twin rooms all with shared bathrooms (no en suites). We will have the entire main house to ourselves during the weekend. The weekend includes all meals, tuition and tea/ coffee breaks.
