Colchester Classics and Local Choirs - part 1

  • IT could be said that music is Liz Leatherdale's life. Not many of us are lucky enough

to have made a vocation out of Pastimes, but Liz has managed to do so.

Colchester born and bred, the mum-of one flrst picked up a musical instrument

aged six and has not looked back since.

These days she can regurlarly be seen performing with choral societies including

the Colchester Bach Choir and Witham Choral Society and her day job is not so far

    removed.

Six years ago, after almost two decades working with  Colchester-based Chandos Records where she set up their mail order service, she established her own company Colchester Classics.

Through it she provides collectors with classical music CDs. This includes working with

a number of the choral groups in the area.

Liz  is clearly passionate about music and she says progranrmes like Gareth

Malone's recent work with the MilitaryWives are helping to bring that message home too.

She says: "It's a very sociable thing, to sing. It's almost a psychological thing

"It is just really uplifting but it  hasbeen difficult to get people to realise the benelits and they

think you have to  have an amazing vocal skill to get involved.

"I think the Military Wives and the previous choirs Gareth Malone put together

have broken through that barrier and people realise what it can give them.

"There are many different layers of  a choir and everyone has their Part  to play."
