Children and adults sing carols side by side

  • This month, children and adults will be singing side by side at carol concerts across the UK. The concerts will include works from new collection Carols for Everyone, which features seven carols arranged for SATB choir and children’s choir.

Carol concerts have always been a central feature of the Christmas event calendar, but it isn’t often that children have the chance to sing the carols alongside the adults. These concerts aim to change that, giving youngsters the chance to experience the thrill of performing in a choral concert while enabling choirs to broaden their outreach activities.

Carols for Everyone was commissioned to mark the centenary of the Carnegie UK Trust, and the participating choirs have been able to purchase copies of the collection thanks to a grant from the trust. Among the choirs taking part is Hallam Choral Society, which will appear alongside children from five schools in Sheffield, and Oxfordshire’s Thame Chamber Choir, which has set up a junior choir especially for its concert.

Carols for Everyone is published by Novello, and was produced following discussion between the Carnegie UK Trust and Making Music, the UK’s leading organisation for voluntary music. Alongside seasonal favourites such as Silent Night and Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, the collection features I Pray, a new commission from Paul Mealor, famous as the composer of Military Wives Choir number one single,
