St Peter's Singers of Leeds - 24hr sponsored Hymn-a-thon

  • On 24th May, members of the choir will be singing the New English Hymnal “from cover to cover” - in excess of 500 hymns over 24 hours in order to raise money to allow us to continue our music-making. The Singers will begin at 1.30pm at Leeds Minster on Friday 24th May and continue in a singing relay until 1.30pm on Saturday 25th May.

"As part of the ancient choral foundation at Leeds Minster, the Singers are well-versed in hymn singing. We will sing our way through the entire New English Hymnal, or as far as we possibly can in the time available.

The Minster will be open during the day on Friday and Saturday and visitors are warmly invited to come in and listen, and to join in if they feel so moved!

The Hymn-a-thon will, for the full 24 hours, be streamed live on the Internet through the Minster website, and we will be live-tweeting as we sing!"

The Hymn-a-thon endeavour has been arranged to raise much-needed funds for St Peter’s Singers. The members of the Singers have since the choir’s foundation in June 1977 been committed to the provision of fine choral music at the heart of a great city as well as farther afield. The choir’s city concerts each season include a major free access event at Leeds Town Hall in February (In February 2014 there will be a concert of music for choir and organ in special commemoration of the First World War – the so-called “war to end all wars” – that broke out a century ago next year). Additionally, a major choral and orchestral presentation at Leeds Minster on the evening of Good Friday has become a significant local event on the most solemn day in the Church’s calendar. Next Good Friday, J S Bach’s Mass in B minor will be presented with soloists drawn from the Singers and accompaniment from Sally Robinson and the National Festival Orchestra.

If you would like to donate to the continued provision of fine choral music in the heart of Leeds then the Singers have set up a Just Giving website where you can donate.
